Area Overview

The West Point area includes rural and wildland-urban interface (WUI) communities such as:

  • West Point
  • Wilseyville
  • Bummerville
  • Sandy Gulch
  • Lili Valley (Subdivision)
  • Blue Creek
  • Additional populated areas and remote residential clusters exist throughout the District.

These areas are characterized by:

  • Mixed conifer forest and brush
  • Steep terrain and drainages
  • Limited access in some locations

Wildfire Risk Factors

Fuels

  • Heavy vegetation including timber, brush, and grasses
  • Seasonal drying leading to increased fire intensity
  • Dead and down material in some areas

Weather

  • Hot, dry summer conditions
  • Low relative humidity
  • Wind-driven fire potential, especially during late summer and fall

Topography

  • Steep slopes and narrow canyons
  • Terrain that can accelerate fire spread
  • Limited escape routes in some areas

Access Considerations

Residents should be aware that:

  • Some roads may be:
    • Narrow
    • Steep
    • Unpaved or difficult to access
  • Turnarounds for large emergency vehicles may be limited

Residents should not assume that all areas have immediate fire protection access.

Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Safety

Defensible Space

Maintain defensible space around structures by:

  • Clearing vegetation near buildings
  • Removing flammable materials
  • Maintain 100-ft defensible space (See Cal-Fire Defensible Space Requirements, external link)
  • Maintaining access for emergency responders

Structure Preparedness

  • Use fire-resistant building materials when possible
  • Maintain roofs and gutters free of debris
  • Ensure address visibility from the road

Evacuation Readiness

  • Have an evacuation plan
  • Know multiple routes out of your area
  • Prepare a “go bag” with essentials

Responsibility During Wildfire Events

  • Follow all evacuation orders and warnings
  • Do not block roadways or emergency access
  • Avoid returning to evacuated areas until cleared
